Plant Bio

Monstera subpinnata

This climbing vine with may hail from tropical rainforest of South America, but it does well in the average home, too. It features unique, deeply pinnately lobed leaves that at first glance, might make you think of a palm frond (or even Amydrium zippelianum). Its botanical name—subpinnata—refers to the leaf shape and how the leaves almost look like they’re pinnately compound.

To keep this vining houseplant happiest, grow it in bright indoor light, ideally, within about 3 to 4 feet of an unobstructed east- or west-facing window (or the equivalent if you grow under artificial lights). It can tolerate lower light levels, but it won’t grow as quickly, and may grow long, lanky growth. Water Monstera subpinnata as the top quarter to half of the potting mix dries to the touch. Or if you keep it in the Wick & Grow self-watering system, just add water to the reservoir as it begins to dry. Like with most other Monstera species/varieties, take care not to overwater subpinnata if it’s not in our self-watering system. Average household temperatures and humidity levels are just fine for this low-maintenance plant.

Note: This plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.
